Undergraduate Admission Awards
The University of Toronto will select the most outstanding undergraduate admission applicants as University of Toronto Scholars. These scholarships, which have a value of $5,000, may be held in any program of study at the University, and in conjunction with any other award that the students may be offered. In no instance is the amount sufficient to cover a student's total university cost.
No separate application is required for most scholarships. Outstanding candidates for admission will be considered automatically for entrance awards. Selection is based on the candidate's overall academic record, with particular emphasis being placed on the most recent results. Because many outstanding students apply to the University each year, the competition for admission scholarships is severe.
International students from Hong Kong should consult the University of Toronto Hong Kong Scholarships web site for information on specific awards for which they may be eligible.
Undergraduate In-course Awards
The University will identify outstanding undergraduates completing 1st, 2nd and 3rd years as University of Toronto Scholars. The Colleges and Faculties also award scholarships at the end of each year of study on the basis of the students' performance in each year. Most of these awards do not require an application.
Undergraduate Grants and Bursaries
Students who have financial need may apply for grant assistance, (also called bursaries) provided acceptable academic standing has been maintained. Applications are available after registration in September from the candidate's Faculty or College. Grants normally range in value from $400 - $1,000.
International students are eligible to be considered for grant assistance. However, because Canada Immigration requires all international students to show that they have adequate resources before admitting them to Canada, a grant will normally be awarded only if there is evidence that the student's circumstances have changed since his/her arrival. In no instance is the amount sufficient to cover a student's total university costs.
Graduate Awards
Financial support is available to highly qualified graduate students from a variety of sources at the University of Toronto. Full-time graduate students are assisted each year through the University of Toronto Fellowship program and numerous other departmental award programs.
In addition to fellowship support, departmental research funding may be available, especially to excellent students in the physical and life sciences. Teaching assistantships are also offered by a large number of departments.
Graduate Grants and Bursaries are available to full-time graduate students on the basis of need. Special or part-time students are typically ineligible. Funding is limited and is specifically for emergencies arising from unforeseen circumstances. First year students are normally not eligible for consideration. Students with scholarship support are not eligible for bursary funding. Application is through the Graduate Coordinator/Chair.

Part-time Employment
Full-time international students may apply for work on the campus of the University of Toronto. Jobs are scarce and students cannot earn enough to cover their costs. It may be possible to work outside the University of Toronto. The Centre for International Experience has information on working in Canada.
